Choices Year 9

You will have the chance in Year 9 to choose your subject options for Years 10 and 11. You do not need to map out your whole life at this stage, but it gives you the opportunity to give some real thought to what you might want to do.

You will have to find out

• what subjects/courses are available at your school, the subjects you must do, and your favourite subjects.
• the different levels of qualification and skills,
• exams versus coursework and
• get to know yourself well so that you can decide what is best for you.

You will not be expected to make these decisions on your own. There will be opportunities during lessons to look at the choices available and to think about what would suit you best.

Do also take the chance to speak with friends, family, teachers and your Connexions Personal Adviser before you make the final decision.

Also, try to keep a balance with your choice of subjects so that as many options as possible are open to you as your abilities and strengths develop.

You may find it useful to get your own copy of a helpful guide aimed at Year 9 students called Which Way Now, produced by Connexions.

You can also order it direct from DCSF publications on 0845 602 2260. It acts as a workbook to use on your own, with a teacher, friends, your Connexions Personal Adviser or your parents/carers.
